DAYLESFORD'S annual New Year's Eve gala parade and festival is under threat because of a lack of volunteers.
A review of the 2006 event found concerns about a lack of community involvement in the planning, organisation and staging of the event.
Recent community meetings have yielded little interest from people and there are warnings the parade could be cancelled for the first time.
"I really don't think it's that people aren't interested, they just dont realise the urgency of it," community member Bettina Ralph said.
"There needs to be more community involvement or it can't go ahead. It can range from on the night help to making a float and representing a school, or having a sausage sizzle and doing a little bit of a fundraiser on the main
street.
"Basically we need people to commit now."
Ms Ralph said the event attracted up to 4000 people every year and the loss of the event would be a blow to the community.
Traditionally volunteers from the Rotary Club of Daylesford have organised the event, but in recent years they have struggled with the workload.
Hepburn Shire Council tourism, economic development and recreation manager Geoff Ryan said the council shared the same concerns about the event's future.
"We also share the concern that there needs to be much more community support to run it," Mr Ryan said.
"Unless there can be more members of the community that can come along as volunteers and help run the event, we cant see it being viable running either.
"Everybody agrees we should have it, but hardly anybody comes along to help run it."
A meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 25, at the Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre, 13 Camp St, Daylesford from 7.30pm.
People interested in helping to save the event are being encouraged to attend. For more information phone the Rotary Club of Daylesford president Bronwen Scarffe on 5348 1112.
