New business boom

30 Jan, 2007 09:58 PM
DAYLESFORD'S Vincent St is bustling with business following the opening of three new shops within a month.

The closure of The Penny Arcade Milk Bar and the relocation of the Daylesford Newsagency saw the buildings vacant for several months.

Minor renovations have seen them flourish into Scott's Liquor and A Day On Earth.

Further down the main drag, a nursery called The Secret Garden of Daylesford has also opened.

Scott's Liquor is a small independent company with four other stores across Victoria.

It stocks premium wine, beer and spirits with a focus on local wine.

Director Matthew France said the company tended to look after local wine wherever the store was located.

"We liked Daylesford. It's a friendly town," he said.

He said the community support had been overwhelming since the store opened.

"We are really pleased with the response," he said.

Mr France said the location of the store was fantastic.

A Day On Earth sells contemporary furniture, ceramics, art work and jewellery.

Australian contemporary artist David Bromley bought the premises because he felt it was a great base to work from and within easy reach of Melbourne and major country towns.

Mr Bromley and his family are living in Daylesford part-time.

Barbera Scanlan from A Day On Earth was thrilled with the response from the community since opening before Christmas.

Hepburn Shire councillors approved the change of use of a house in Vincent St to a cafe, retail and plant nursery last week.

The Secret Garden also includes three shops featuring local art work.

Louise McLachlan from The Secret Garden said she wanted to provide a beautiful place for people to sit and relax.
