HEPBURN Shire Council has partnered with bus companies to provide a new, safer bus stop in Daylesford.
The new Bridport St stop will replace the current site in Vincent St that does not meet disability-access standards.
Once the new bus stop is operational, the present bus stop in Vincent St will be removed and the current bay converted to parallel-parking bays.
Works on the new bus stop will start this week and be completed in early June.
In Daylesford, bus services are provided by Little's Bus Services, which operates between Hepburn Springs and Daylesford.
There is a V/Line bus service between Geelong and Bendigo, a V/Line bus service between Woodend and Daylesford, plus the bus service to Ballan to connect to the Melbourne and Ballarat rail system, as well as the daily school bus to Ballarat.
Currently the services use the one bus stop in Vincent St.
Following public concern, the council, the Department of Infrastructure, V/Line and Little's Bus Service joined forces to investigate the problem.
A new site was identified and the Department of Infrastructure, which is undertaking a bus Interchange Safety Program, provided the council with a $40,000 package to build the new bus stop.
It will be located in Bridport Street alongside the Daylesford swimming pool, opposite the CFA station.
Daylesford newsagent Les Faulkhead, whose business abuts the former bus stop site, said the change of site would create mixed results for Vincent St shops.
"The extra parking will be good. But we find people often get off the bus and come in and buy a paper," Mr Faulkhead said.
Shire operations manager Andrew Bourke said bus transport was vital to the community.
"The new improved bus stop in Bridport St will provide a centralised location for local, long distance and charter services from the surrounding Daylesford area that is compliant for the bus services and provide access for all people
wanting to utilise the services," Mr Bourke said.
Within Victoria, public transport by bus - either operating within towns or catering for long distance travel between regional centres - is a common mode of transportation.
Some 3200 daily services through 629 routes provided by 90 operators are provided as a transportation mode in Regional Victoria.
