Ned Kelly council stunt delivers more tourism to Daylesford and Hepburn Shire

24 Jun, 2008 01:11 PM
TOURISM increased in Hepburn Shire last week - thanks to Ned Kelly.

The bushranger, aka avid council watcher Rod Kirby, attended last week's council meeting on June 17 wearing a steel helmet, long coat and gumboots along with a sign declaring rates were "highway robbery".

Mr Kirby refused to either remove his helmet or leave the meeting and mayor Tim Hayes declared the meeting adjourned. It was due to be held last night.

The stunt, which saw numerous council items held over as the end of the financial year drew to a close, caused a media frenzy with television camera crews descending on Daylesford last Wednesday.

Interviews with Cr Hayes and Mr Kirby were broadcast across Melbourne talkback radio, while the evening news showed the township to a bemused audience around Australia.

Last week Hepburn Regional Tourism Association member Nigel Dempster said business operators had reported a spike in visitors after the coverage - proving all publicity is good publicity.

"The HRTA had a lot of hits on its website on Thursday," he said.

"Most of the operators said they were quite busy. They were delighted with the coverage we received."

Meanwhile, Mr Kirby said he had just wanted to get his point across that the elderly were living purely to pay fees and charges.

The Hepburn Springs resident said he initially refused to leave because he believed he had as much right as the mayor to be at the meeting.

After the adjourned meeting, the shire's acting chief executive officer Philip Shanahan said Cr Hayes was "100 per cent correct" to adjourn the meeting.

"The `Ned Kelly' protester was perfectly entitled to make his silent protest as he did," Mr Shanahan said. "But if he were to remain at the meeting he needed to remove his helmet. "
