Muskvale fire clean-up continues

24 Mar, 2009 11:04 AM
REHABILITATION works on land affected by last month's Muskvale fire has started.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment has begun clearing dangerous trees, repairing tracks and rehabilitating control lines on both private and public lands.

Fences cut during the fire fighting effort will also be repaired.

Others works include the repair of damaged bridges, stream stabilisation operations and the installation of silt traps.

DSE Midlands district manager Jon Rofe said his organisaton was assessing fire-affected areas and would conduct works as soon as they are practical.

"Changed conditions will continue in parts of the Wombat State Forest for some time and we ask people to avoid visiting fire-affected sections while works are underway," he said.

"Some road closures will continue, for example sections of Wombat Creek Road and Cockatoo Track in the Wombat State Forest will remain closed due to the loss of bridges. Replacement of these bridges may take several months."

Mr Rofe said Hepburn and Moorabool shire councils would help with the rehabilitation program carrying out work on the contingency lines built as strategic measures along forest and council roads during the fire-fighting effort.

"The co-operative relationship between local and State Government, so important during the fire fight, is now equally important in making sure rehabilitation works happen as quickly as possible," he said.

Mr Rofe said the DSE would continue to be fire-ready during the rehabilitation period and will also conduct fuel-reduction burning if conditions were assessed as suitable.
