 Mayor's spiritual journey

Mayor's spiritual journey

14 Jun, 2006 10:12 AM
IN WHAT may be a first for a municipality, Hepburn Shire Mayor Heather Mutimer took residents and council staff on a spiritual journey earlier today when she held her first "meditate with the mayor" session at the Daylesford Town Hall.

Cr Mutimer said meditation proved to be a stress-relief.

She said she meditated where possible and hoped residents and council staff could join her before work.

"It does have real benefits in helping people relieve their stress and helps the immune system," she said.

"I work so much better after meditation and handle things differently throughout the day."

The 30-minute sessions start at 8am on Wednesdays.

Cr Mutimer said she hoped it would attract council staff and community members of all ages.

"It's a good opportunity for people who haven't meditated to learn how to do it. It's not just for beginners, it's for everyone," Cr Mutimer said.

"It might grow into something interesting."

Cr Mutimer said she had not heard of any other mayor who had held meditation sessions, but organisations including Telstra offered it for employees.

"I've had the idea for some time. I wanted to start it earlier this year, but with the council budget I didn't get around to it," she said.

"I'm really looking forward to it and see it as a way to connect with everyone."

Cr Mutimer said people should bring a mat or cushion to sessions.

She said there may be time for tea or coffee afterwards in Daylesford or at the town hall.
