CRESWICK Town Hall is being upgraded in a bid to encourage more use.
And as part of the community's vision for the hall, professional touring productions are hoped to one day grace its stages.
The hall, which dates back to 1867, is listed on the Historic Buildings Register and is recorded on the National Trust of Australia.
A joint project between the community, Hepburn Shire Council and the State Government began in 2006 to improve the facility.
An architect was commissioned to develop a long-term plan for the building.
The project will see a full-size, concert-style performance stage, change and costume areas, rehearsal and storage space, meeting rooms and a kitchen redeveloped.
As part of stage one, there will be improved lighting, building and stage access, natural gas heating, painting and electrical works.
The hall's newly formed committee, Friends of the Town Hall, have also given their time to help with the project.
The first stage is hoped to be completed by February 2009.
Hepburn Shire Council culture and arts officer Sue Jones said the project was an outstanding example of a community partnership between organisations, local businesses and council.
Creswick Ward councillor Janine Booth said the project may allow the town one day to invite international-class touring productions to use the Town Hall.
"As it is a large community space, it offers the potential for increased community use," Cr Booth said.
