Marriage thrives, despite inauspicious beginning

COMPARED to modern standards it wouldn't be the most ideal start to any marriage.

"We were engaged on the Wednesday, married on the Friday and I left for the war on the Sunday," Harry Toole said.

Recently, long-time Clunes couple, Harry and Edna Toole celebrated 65 years of marriage.

"We met some years before we got married because Edna's family used to come up to Clunes on holidays," Harry said.

"I had the opportunity to leave Clunes but I never had the desire to leave. I'm Clunes through and through all my life.

I will always be a part of Clunes ...I'm a country person and I didn't want to go to the city."

The couple said they were thankful for everything they had, including two children and their home of almost 60 years overlooking the footy oval.

Edna said she didn't worry when her husband of just one day boarded the train to join the war.

"It was normal for those times," she said.

"You didn't worry about it. It was happening to most of the young people. Our lives have been really good."

Just a few of the community organisations Harry has had an involvement with include the RSL, the golf, swimming and football clubs, an aged care home and he was a councillor for 24 years.

Harry is also still chairman of the cemetery trust and is a past recipient for citizen of the year.

"We strived for development the whole time I was a councillor and now we are getting it. It's very enlightening to me because I go down the street on a Saturday morning and have difficulty finding a park," Harry said.

"We have been very fortunate. You would have to say children are the most memorable part of any marriage. We haven't had any worries with them like others have."
