Malmsbury Birthday wine a choice drop

17 Feb, 2009 10:22 AM
BIRTHDAY Villa Vineyard has won the People's Choice award at the Daylesford Wine Show.

Show president Miranda Jones said the seventh annual wine show, held in November, was a great success with entries from vineyards around Ballarat, Heathcote, Bendigo and Macedon Ranges.

"When the wine show first started we had 70 entries and now it has built to 270 entries," Ms Jones said.

She said there were 50 people, including winemakers and judges, at the public tasting at Daylesford Neighbourhood House. Lake House sponsored the awards.

Birthday Villa Vineyard in Malmsbury won the people's choice award for its dessert wine, Gewurztraminer Auslese 2008.

"It's a very nice wine to have with soft cheeses and desserts which are not too sweet, like rhubarb pie," Birthday Villa owner Jan Thomas said.

Ms Thomas said that while the grapes were grown at the vineyard, winemaker Greg Dedman made the wine at Bendigo TAFE.

Ms Jones said that that one of the benefits of the wine show was that all entrants received substantial feedback from the judges.

"There's so much competition in the wine industry and we think the show is important for raising the standard of local wines, which is not to say they're not brilliant already, but there's always room for improvement," Ms Jones said.
