The exhibition "Lionel Lindsay - Artist, Adventurer and Advocate" was opened by the federal member for Ballarat, Catherine King, at the Creswick Museum on January 31.
The exhibition, overseen by curator Geoff Newmarch, includes 63 works by Sir Lionel Lindsay from private collections and institutions such as the Art Gallery of Ballarat and the Wesley Collection.
Ms King acknowledged the efforts of Margaret Fullwood and Geoffrey Newmarch in bringing the exhibition to fruition.
She said Creswick held a significant link to the famous Lindsay family following the arrival in 1864 of Dr Robert and Mrs Jane Lindsay from Ireland.
"Lionel Lindsay, who we are celebrating in this wonderful exhibition, remains one of Australia's great artists," she said.
"What great artists like Lionel Lindsay leave us is not only a great collection of images and art works which tell a story of place and time."
Also attending the exhibition opening were Hepburn Shire Council mayor Sebastian Klein and Councillor Don Henderson.
Born in 1874, Lionel was one of the 10 Lindsay children renowned in Australian history.
Many of the works, which include depictions of Creswick and the Lindsay family, have never been shown in a public gallery before.
The exhibition in the Creswick Museum runs until May 13.
