 Lest we forget

Lest we forget

22 Apr, 2008 10:41 AM
IT WILL be a day of remembrance on Friday, when districts unite to pay tribute to those who've fought and fallen in many battles.

This year's ANZAC Day celebrations will see many people marching, young and old, to remember the Australians who sacrificed themselves for the freedom we have today.

In Daylesford, the Dawn Service will be held at 6.30am at the cenotaph.

In Hepburn, people will assemble at 8.30am for their service and Eganstown's ceremony will be at 9am.

In Daylesford, people will assemble outside the Town Hall at 10am to march down Vincent St to the cenotaph at 10.15am.

The service will see wreaths layed and prayers offered in memory of the fallen.

Daylesford RSL president Neil Chamberlain said there would be several Vietnam veterans attending the service, along with World War II ex-servicemen, with a number of these people marching.

He believed the importance of ANZAC Day was to remind people of the sacrifices others have made for our country.

"People are certainly interested in what's going on and when kids today find out they've got a connection, that a grandfather or great grandfather fought in the war, it makes it really special," Mr Chamberlain said.

"It's also important to remember the fact that some came back and others didn't - we've got to recognise that."

With this year's discovery of HMAS Sydney, others may be encouraged to attend the service in recognition of those lost in battle.

Mr Chamberlain said the crowds at the Dawn Service were getting larger all the time and he believed it was because the celebration was part of national history.

"It's not just the fact that RSL members want to be recognised, but there is the family history," Mr Chamberlain said.

"A grandfather may have passed away and family members may want to go and march in their honour, so it's a day that will be forever celebrated."

James Eedle will be guest speaker at the Clunes service, which begins at 10.30am at Clunes RSL in Fraser St.

A march to the town's war memorial will start at 10.45am and a wreath laying ceremony will follow at 11am.
