FEDERAL member for Ballarat Catherine King paid tribute to CFA firefighters who battled bushfires in Victoria last month.
Ms King thanked the brigades for their "extraordinary effort" during her adjournment speech on March 1, at parliament in Canberra.
"These are totally voluntary brigades, drawing their membership from smaller towns," Ms King said.
"They put in an enormous effort throughout the year, making sure that they are trained and ready for exactly the events of last month."
Ms King named CFA brigades for Hansard record including local crews: Ascot and district, Blackwood, Campbelltown, Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford, Franklinford, Glenlyon, Guildford, Hepburn, Kingston, Kooroocheang-Werona,
Leonards Hill and District, Mollongghip, Mt Beckworth, Musk, Newlyn-Dean, Porcupine Ridge, Smeaton, Spring Hill, Trentham and Ullina.
"They fought fires in the Grampians and at Anakie and the fires on our doorstep at Creswick and Mt Misery," Ms King said.
"Your bravery, selflessness and professionalism is a credit to the CFA and our communities."
Ms King said communities were still counting the costs of the fires. In the Grampians 34,250ha of farming land were wiped out; 100,000ha in Anakie were scorched with three homes, a community hall, sheds and vehicles destroyed;
60,000 sheep died in Willaura and Moyston; and crops including olives, lavender, grapes and cut flowers through the Moyston and Pomonal corridor were badly affected.
Ms King also thanked members of emergency services, DSE and private volunteers.
