Kids at Daylesford skate park in danger, warns mum

THE future of the Daylesford Community Park will soon be decided, but parents fear the dangerous condition of the current skate park means the project can wait no longer.

Council has appointed iKonic Playgrounds Pty Ltd to undertake the playground design process for the Daylesford Community Park on the corner of Stanbridge and Duke streets, adjoining the existing skate park.

Council chief executive officer Kaylene Conrick said the council was awaiting for advice from the Department of Planning and Community Development about its funding submission for $60,000, which would allow the project to proceed.

But Daylesford parent Kathleen Murray fears the "dangerous and disgraceful" state of the park is an an accident waiting to happen and she has written to the council requesting it take immediate action.

Ms Murray said when she visited the skate park with her four- and seven-year-old children, they were confronted with an area full of rubbish with plastic bottles, empty spray cans and smashed glass.

"The place was busy with several teenagers, who of course need to have fun. However, they were shamelessly spray painting the area when we were there (at 2pm) and also building a wooden ramp extension," she said.

"I have noticed this was in place over the weekend and being used by many, many teenagers. There will no doubt be a serious accident if illegal and unsecured extensions are added."

Ms Murray called for bollards to be inserted into the street, to stop the practice of cars driving up on the grass and right up to the skate park.

"One day a child will get seriously or fatally injured because they weren't seen by the illegal drivers," she said.

Ms Conrick said the council was now in the process of establishing both an internal project group and community-based group to work with iKonic Playgrounds to allow design work to be completed by the end of May.
