A HYDROTHERAPY pool may be included in a proposed development for Daylesford's Victoria Park, but if the community does not support the proposal, the frail and elderly will miss out again.
Vic Park Association committee member Allan McLeod said the park would be the ideal space for a hydrotherapy pool, but only if the community was willing to back it.
"The troops need to rally. The community has got to say `this has got to happen','' he said.
The need for a hydrotherapy pool in Daylesford has been an issue since the pool at the Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa was renovated last year.
At a depth of 1.4 metres, it was no longer suitable.
Currently the elderly and frail travel to Gisborne, the closest-available facility.
Mr McLeod said a pool had been considered as part of the Vic Park project, but due to the expense it would only get the green light if residents committed to using it.
"We need people to get in touch with us,'' Mr McLeod said.
He said the benefits of a hydrotherapy facility were clear. When the heating in the Gisborne pool broke down and put the facility out of action recently, he said it had a big effect on the people who relied on it.
"Within two weeks there were between 20 to 25 people who were mobile that weren't any more,'' Mr McLeod said.
"It's badly needed.''
A hydrotherapy pool would be just one aspect of the multi-purpose facility.
The Vic Park Association is conducting a feasibility study for the construction of the facility, which would include community meeting spaces, change rooms, storage facilities and an industrial kitchen.
Mr McLeod said the space would cater for a range of activities including the sporting, recreational, educational, health, social, emergency and entrepreneurial needs of the town.
A children's space has also been proposed and The Vic Park Association is calling for expressions of interest from members of the community interested in using it.
Mr McLeod said 18 businesses had already committed to using the multipurpose facility and various parties had agreed to put funding into it, including the Department of Education.
