Hundreds expected for food, wine, music festival

27 Mar, 2007 09:20 AM
HISTORIC Andersons Mill will come alive this Sunday with hundreds of people expected to join in the festivities at the Andersons Mill Festival.

In its 13th year, the festival will feature mill tours, face painting, over 40 stalls and bullboar, wine appreciation and organic farming workshops.

There will also be six local wineries.

Entertainment includes the Ballarat High School Band, Scallywags Dog Troupe, Latin band Los Locos, jazz band Nite Owls and local artist Annie Coyne and friends.

The Newlyn Football Netball Club and Parks Victoria organise the festival which promotes the riches of the region - food, wine, music, art, crafts and heritage.

Event organiser Lou Tippett said the festival attracted about 1500 people.

"The festival is a great weekend to explore, enjoy, taste, try and buy in a setting that is breathtaking and offers a glimpse of the past industry of the early days of the goldfields," she said.

Mrs Tippett said funds raised from the festival would help the Newlyn Junior Football Club buy items including football jumpers.

Andersons Mill is a reminder of an industry that flourished after the goldrush of the 1850s.

Construction of the fascinating five storey flour mill started in 1861 and included stables, a grain store and a bluestone office.

The mill closed in 1957 and became one of the first buildings to be included on the Historic Buildings Register in 1974. Much needed repairs were made and the mill was finally purchased by the State Government in 1987.

The site today is the culmination of hard work and dedication from conservation professionals, local groups and government departments involved in the restoration program.
