Hope for Julieta

09 May, 2006 01:00 PM
JULIETA WEISS is a step closer to receiving further treatment for breast cancer after a weekend art aution raised about $30,000 for the cause.

The art auction was held last Sunday at The Palais in Hepburn Springs to help the 50-year-old access the potentially life-saving treatment Herceptin.

Since appearing in The Advocate in March, the Weiss family has been calling on community support to help raise enough money for the drug which costs $70,000 annually, and is Mrs Weiss' best chance of survival.

Herceptin is not available under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

Regional and Melbourne artists donated 135 paintings and artworks for the auction that attracted about 250 people.

"The energy in the room was amazing and the way people responded to the auction. People were bidding and everyone was really generous," Mrs Weiss said.

"My family is really happy. In a small town it was amazing how it went. It was professionally done and

without the help from artists Dee

Waterhouse and Trish Henderson we wouldn't have known what to do."

Kim Horton from Daylesford said the community was behind Mrs Weiss at the auction.

"Jules couldn't have asked for a better day. She is one of my closest friends and is so giving but finds it hard to ask for help," she said.

Mrs Weiss said she was feeling good and slept heavily the night after the auction.

She will see her doctor on May 24 to discuss the next step in her treatment.

There are 22 artworks unsold from the auction. Anyone interested in buying them or making a donation phone 5348 1506.

Thank you

JULIETA WEISS and family would like to thank everybody who contributed to make the day a huge success.
