Hepburn Shire orders clean up of asbestos from a Clunes subdivision site

25 May, 2010 11:36 AM
HEPBURN Shire Council will enforce an immediate clean-up of an asbestos-riddled subdivision at Clunes, after wrongly declaring it asbestos-free.

Smith St residents Andrew Green and Jacki Gautam, who with their two young children live next door to the land being developed to make way for a subdivision, called on the council, the EPA and Worksafe two weeks ago to examine the site after realising old chook sheds being demolished were made of asbestos.

Mr Green said he saw workers demolishing the sheds and loading sheets of asbestos onto the back of a ute.

He said some pieces were left on the ground.

Ms Gautam said she was furious when the council then inspected the site and said no asbestos was present.

"They came out here and said 'It's gone, it's safe', which was infuriating,'' she said.

"I have two small children and . . . they are coming in here and playing.

"The site is being subdivided so someone will live where the asbestos is.''

Ms Gautam said she was so worried she commissioned a private soil sample to be taken, which detected three types of asbestos.

The council's general manager of sustainable development, Robert Jennings, told The Advocate on Friday,

The site should be cleaned of asbestos properly. Why should residents and potential building workers and future occupiers be put at risk? No demolition permit issued. What is the Shire doing? Will the owner be prosecuted? EPA says Waste from commercial operations is classified as prescribed industrial waste and removed by licensed persons. It wasn't. This was a Poultry Farm. Some say its a paltry situation and it smells foul. Now the owner shovels waste soil into trailer whilst removing bits of ?? No masks. No signs.Does the Shire and EPA know? No diligence here.
