Hazard reduction burning steps up in Hepburn Shire

Hazard reduction burning steps up in Hepburn Shire

31 Mar, 2009 10:43 AM
TWENTY hectares of forest in the shire will be burned this week in a bid to reduce fuel loads.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment is conducting the burns as part of its usual burning program.

Forest in the Whalebone, Blackwood and Mt Macedon areas will be burned, as part of eight fuel reduction burns that began at the weekend.

The burns will help protect the Blackwood, Mt Macedon, Woodend and adjoining communities with less fuel in these areas for future fire outbreaks.

It follows the DSE's ongoing recovery works to rebuild the Daylesford area after February's bushfires.

The Muskvale-Hogans Rd fire, which began on February 23, burned a total of 2658ha.

During the fire, 70km of fencing, 20ha of pine plantation and four bridges were lost.

The DSE's recovery works will include clearing dangerous trees, repairing tracks and rehabilitating control lines on public and private land.

DSE Midlands district manager Jon Rofe said cooperation between the DSE and Hepburn and Moorabool shire councils was important in ensuring the work happened quickly.

Last week, the DSE released details of its planned fuel reduction burns, which are a separate program to the recovery works.

A DSE spokeswoman said the burns would only proceed if fuel and weather conditions were suitable.

Residents may see smoke after the fires have been lit and during the burns.

Traffic management will also be in place for each of the burns.

The Country Fire Authority, council, police, wildlife carers and adjoining landowners will be notified before the burns begin.

Signs have also been erected around the burns to notify residents that burns may be carried out this season.

In some instances, a letter-box drop will be done.

Ecological burns south-east of Ballarat at Lal Lal Falls and Boondaree were also conducted last week, to help establishment of native grassland.

If people would like to be contacted before a burn opposite their property, they should call 5321 6888 to register their details.
