Hayes eager to boost economic development in Hepburn Shire

07 Mar, 2006 11:46 AM
TIM Hayes will represent Cameron ward following his election to Hepburn Shire Council on Saturday.

After the allocation of preferences Cr Hayes finished with 1081 votes, while Chris Culvenor polled 934 votes.

Candidates Christeen O'Donnell and Tom Binns were eliminated in the initial rounds under the preferential system.

Cr Hayes said he was delighted with the outcome and believed he could make a contribution to council.

"With four candidates, it was a difficult election to call," he said.

Cr Hayes, who has worked in local government for 25 years, said he looked forward to joining mayor Heather Mutimer, deputy mayor Bill McClenaghan, David Smith and Janine Booth on council.

Cr Hayes said he would contribute to Clunes' economic development during his time as a councillor.

"This area hasn't progressed as it should have over the years," he said.

"I want to see the economic development role moving forward to the western side."

Cr Mutimer offered a warm welcome to Cr Hayes.

She said the council, elected in November, was already working positively together and was looking forward to full representation in all wards.

"Each councillor adds skills and experience and this diversity holds us in good stead for the challenges ahead," she said.

Council's chief executive officer Victor Szwed commended all four candidates for their efforts and dedication to the community.

"The Hepburn Shire has a strong history of dedicated and passionate representatives on council, with the Cameron ward being no exception," he said.

"It is well known for its vibrant community spirit."

The Cameron ward by-election was held after Bernadette Stamatov died just after being elected in the November election.

Cr Hayes will take his oath of office at a statutory meeting at the Clunes Town Hall at 7pm tomorrow.
