JUBILEE Lake has a new group of friends after the lease for the caravan park was awarded to a Queensland company over local tenderers.
The Friends of Jubliee Lake want to ensure the park remains accessible to the public.
Current lessees Rob and Kristen Aberdein were out tendered by Queensland company Australian Tourist Parks Management.
The action group of 12 believes the new lease will reduce community participation and heritage values of the lake and its surrounds.
Michael Clarke of Eganstown said Friends of Jubilee Lake was meant as a forum for discussion.
`'I've watched my kids swim in Jubilee Lake and I want to preserve that right and joy for other ordinary families," Mr Clarke said.
"It's also a chance to provide an opportunity for community input into its development and the conservation of the lake and its surrounds."
Councillors last week met with ATPM to discuss the company's plans for the caravan park.
The council has responded to criticism of its decision to award the tender the ATPM.
Details contained in a report provided by the council said capital works offered by ATPM were $1.4 million, initially spending $130,000 in the first year and substantially bringing forward the refurbishment of the amenities
blocks. A further $620,000 will be spent within the next four years.
"This offer was far above any of the other tenders, the next best being $451,000," the report said.
"ATPM was assessed as the preferred tenderer based on the criteria, and the majority vote of councillors determined in favour of awarding the contract."
