Green Corps graduates

20 Feb, 2008 10:08 AM
SEVEN young people celebrated their graduation from Green Corps last week at the Victorian Landcare Centre in Creswick.

The group was part of a Hepburn Regional Park project, which was developed in partnership between Conservation Volunteers Australia and Parks Victoria.

It involved 10 young people devoting their time and effort to conserve, preserve and restore the area's natural environment.

One of the project's focuses was planting the avenue of remembrance at the Australasian Mine, which was a key part in helping the Creswick community and descents remember the 24 miners who died in the disaster 125 years ago.

Park Ranger Karen Doyle said a tree was planted for each miner.

"Everyone felt the avenue was very symbolic and will be a lasting reminder for the community." Ms Doyle said.

The Green Corps program is an Australian Government youth development and environmental training initiative for young people aged between 17 and 20 years.
