Glenylon farmers' win gold medal for organic garlic

27 Jul, 2010 01:47 PM
GLENLYON couple Deri-Anne and Tim Wyatt have thrilled food critics with their organic garlic, taking out a gold medal in the national 2010 ABC ifdeliciousnf Produce Awards.

The Wyatts relocated to Glenlyon from Melbourne 10 years ago with the dream of setting up an organic farm.

Mr Wyatt is a former chef and Ms Wyatt has a background in holistic health,

Ms Wyatt said they had both separately been obsessed with good quality food since childhood.

They established Angelica Organic Farm which, from day one, has been grown by chemical-free means.

Garlic has quickly become the farm's mainstay crop, and they attribute its success to an artisan approach to growing.

"We personally adore using garlic. It's probably one of our favourite ingredients to cook with," Ms Wyatt said.

She attributes their gourmet garlic's piquant and rich depth of flavour to the region's ideal climatic conditions with its long, cold, wet winters and fertile, red volcanic soils.

The garlic is also produced entirely by hand, from planting through to packing.

Angelica Organic Farm currently has "in conversion" for certified organic status and is working towards achieving full organic certification within the very near future.

Ms Wyatt said it was great to be part of a region that was known and becoming better known for producing good quality organic food.

"We hope, because there has been a few organic producers winning industry awards including a few in this district, that is contributes to promoting organic produce," Ms Wyatt said.

"It's great there is a growing awareness about food and where it comes from.

"A lot of people for a long time haven't had a lot of connection to where their food comes from.

"Children grow up thinking their milk comes from a carton.

"To win this, it's really lovely to know we are on the right track and we're doing a good job."

The winners of the 2010 Produce Awards were announced on July 19 in Melbourne. All producers who entered the awards were shortlisted by a panel of Australia's leading chefs from around the nation, before being presented to the national judges Matt Moran, Philip Johnson, Cheong

Liew, Alla Wolf-Tasker, Neil Perry and Maggie Beer.

Holy Goat Cheese from Sutton Grange was the overall winner of the From the Dairy section while Daylesford Organics picked up a gold medal in From the Earth.
