STRICTER controls will be put in place after the council incorrectly removed a significant number of trees from the roadside in Glenlyon.
Residents and members of the Trentham Landcare Group advised the council of the mistake after staff cleared a length of vegetation including tree suckers on the Spring Hill-Glenlyon Rd.
Hepburn Shire Mayor Heather Mutimer said it was unfortunate the mistake had been made and commended residents for their actions which included advising the council on ways to restore the vegetation.
"The council has been quick to acknowledge the mistake and take action to address it," she said.
The council issued itself with an infringement notice fining itself $1050 for undertaking works without the required planning permit.
The money will be dispersed among local landcare groups.
An offset requirement will be the replanting of 1550 trees along the roadside reserve and at other appropriate locations, in consultation with Trentham Landcare Group and the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
The Trentham Landcare Group has carried out detailed inspections and analysis to asses what has occurred.
"This highlights the value of a community which cares about the environment," Cr Mutimer said.
Cr Mutimer said the mistake had made way for the introduction of more stringent controls within the council.
New procedures will be implemented including marking trees to be removed.
Cr Mutimer congratulated the concerned community members for their conduct and willingness to work with the council to address and resolve the issue.
A further site inspection is being organised to include the council, DSE, consultants and Trentham Landcare Group to determine if further action is required for compensation and to thoroughly evaluate the site.
