Full-blown scholar

TALENTED Griffyn Haroutunian has vowed he will never run out of breath when he blows into his bagpipes.

The nine-year-old from Daylesford has been playing the pipes for more than a year and hopes to travel to Scotland and become a major in a pipe band.

"It's something interesting to do and it fills up time," he said.

"I like the sound of the bag pipes. I was going to play the piano but my piano teacher suggested I join the Daylesford and District Drums and Pipe Band."

Griffyn, who has been awarded a full music scholarship at Ballarat Grammar, plays with three drone reeds on the bagpipes.

His mother Toliene Haroutunian said this was very rare for a nine-year-old.

She said most young people start playing with a practice goose bagpipe where the drones are blocked.

"Griffyn has gone straight to playing with drones which is what an adult plays," she said.

Griffyn said he was looking forward to starting school at Ballarat Grammar and follow his brother's footsteps who also plays the bagpipes and is on a scholarship.

He will start in grade five next term, while Aram, 12, is in year seven.

"I think Griffyn will like it. He will have to get used to lots of homework," Aram said.

Ms Haroutunian said her children, who play for the Daylesford and District Pipes and Drums, have learnt to read and play music.

"They perform well in all areas," she said.

Aram can also play the cello and drums while Griffyn would like to learn the bass recorder.
