Forest Resort opening to bring on the boom

27 Feb, 2008 09:27 AM
LOCAL business figures are predicting a boom in Creswick, with the opening of Forest Resort next month.

Employment, population growth and Creswick's property market are tipped for huge increase.

Creswick and District Development Association president Mark Shalless said the resort would attract Daylesford and Ballarat residents for work, with some commuting from other regions.

He said Creswick could provide accommodation to those people in the long term.

But he said it wasn't just Creswick's tourism that was developing, with everything in the town showing consistent growth over the last census period.

"The town has been developing enormously over the past five years, with new sites opening up and who knows what they will turn out to be," Mr Shalless said.

He said the resort would give Daylesford and Ballarat tourists a reason to come to Creswick, adding "another product on the market".

"There are a range of services to the resort that may not have been identified, with smaller bus tours to the wine regions, cheese producers, Villages of the Old Goldfields ... the whole region will benefit."

Hepburn Shire Creswick ward councillor Janine Booth said the resort would put Creswick on the map through its international and interstate promotion of the resort.

"From a business point of view, we're very much aware of the impact that bringing 50,000 visitors will have on business, and it creates new opportunities for Creswick businesses to raise the bar a little," she said.

Meanwhile, Creswick house prices are tipped to reach Daylesford house prices, with the out-of-town inquiry for Creswick now "enormous".

Cosgrave Real Estate agent Gerard Cosgrave said the resort would have a positive value on property values and bring potential purchases.

Over the past four years, prices have increased 50 to 60 per cent, he said.

Mr Cosgrave said the resort would give Creswick the same drawcard Daylesford had with its spa resorts.

"You're going to have people using it on a regular basis on weekends, which will bring a different culture to Creswick ... they will have the opportunity and income to purchase in Creswick," he said.

"Creswick will certainly be a very good investment, as in time, it will reach the same as Daylesford, without any hesitation."
