THE Department of Sustainability and Environment is developing a statewide firewood strategy for public land.
The Director of Forests, Lee Miezis said for many Victorians firewood was an accessible, affordable source of heating and energy.
"Commercial firewood harvesting also provides important employment and economic benefits in many regional communities," he said.
"It is vital that firewood remains accessible, on a sustainable basis, in the future."
Mr Miezis said the first step of the strategy was a discussion paper, now out for public comment.
"We want Victorians with an interest in firewood to contribute to this important strategy by making a submission on the discussion paper," he said.
"The objective of the strategy is to map out a sustainable future for firewood collected from Victoria's state forests, balancing the health of the environment with the needs of local communities.
"The strategy's primary objective is to develop an efficient and practical pricing and distribution system for both commercial and domestic firewood sourced from public land.
"It's about securing a sustainable supply of firewood from public land for our children, and their children."
Mr Miezis said the DSE was consulting with a range of Victorian Government agencies, the firewood industry and other stakeholders as well as community groups during the development of the strategy.
The closing date for submissions is September 23.
