Festival organisers take pole position to council

11 Jul, 2006 10:29 AM
REPRESENTATIVES from five major Daylesford and Hepburn Springs festivals and special events have joined forces to fight the Hepburn Shire Council's flag and banner policy.

Principal organisers from the Swiss Italian Festa, the Fabulous Flower Festa, Words in Winter Celebration, the Daylesford Foto Biennale and the ChillOut Festival have formed the group, which aims to raise awareness of the

importance of flags and banners being flown at the Daylesford Town Hall to promote major community festivals and events.

"It's so simple and such an easy way for this council to demonstrate its support of the community and community-created festivals and special events," festival group spokeswoman Della Gogoll said.

She said the group's request applies only to the two existing timber flag masts that sit outside the mayor's balcony at the Daylesford Town Hall and not the official flag pole on top of the Town Hall, which is reserved exclusively

for the Australian flag.

The festival group met with councillors and council executives recently to put forward a request for an immediate change to the flag policy and to outline numerous reasons why the current policy is "unworkable".

A request was also put forward by the group that flags representing each festival, and other major festivals and events, be displayed at the Daylesford Town Hall for the duration of each festival.

"We have appealed to council to move swiftly in its actions to correct the current problem and we hope to see a workable solution in place by the July council meeting, or earlier if possible," Ms Gogoll said.

"If council genuinely supports the interests of major festivals and special events in Daylesford/Hepburn Springs, this should be a really simple matter to resolve."

The group also urged the council to consult with the communities of Trentham, Creswick and Clunes about adopting flag policies.
