Experts to mull over Daylesford pool options

22 Jun, 2010 10:27 AM
DELIVERING an indoor, heated aquatic centre to Daylesford could be as simple as thinking outside the box, a Hepburn Shire councillor said.

At its ordinary council meeting on June 15, councillors resolved to convene a meeting of experts to further discuss the matter of an indoor, heated pool.

It came after council was asked to consider a petition with 1421 signatures, which called for a feasibility study to be conducted into building an indoor pool at Daylesford.

Cr Rod May said council should consider its options before committing to a feasibility study, which in itself would cost $60,000.

Mt Alexander completed a feasibility study for an indoor heated aquatic centre in 2009 and indicative costs ranged between $12 million and $16 million with an average annual operational subsidy within the range of $300,000 to $400,000.

Cr May said the likely cost of such a project could be beyond the means of Hepburn Shire Council, unless there was some way to remove the "bells and whistles".

"With some engineering, some ingenuity, some local expertise and knowledge, we may be able to come up with a facility that is nowhere near the cost," Cr May said.

"Instead of going down the main highway with a big top-end facility, maybe there's another way."

A group of Daylesford residents say an indoor aquatic facility is needed in the town to provide hydrotherapy and swim programs all year round.
