Enrolment figures drop

30 Jan, 2007 10:42 AM
PRINCIPALS across Hepburn Shire are preferring full class sizes following a slight drop in enrolment numbers compared to last year.

Some primary schools reported static or increased numbers for 2007, but most experienced a drop of up to 15 pupils.

The primary school year starts today. Some preps will start tomorrow, Friday and Monday.

Clunes, Creswick North, Daylesford, Newlyn and Yandoit primary schools all recorded a drop in enrolment numbers, while Bullarto and Drummond primary schools experienced an increase.

Bullarto Primary School has increased enrolments by one more pupil than last year, with 23 pupils.

Principal Sue Beel said four new preps would start today, which she said was pleasing.

"It's steady," she said.

"It's looking good. We will start off the program with a bang."

Ms Beel said there would be small classroom sizes with 13 pupils in one room and 10 in the other.

Clunes Primary School principal Andrew Parry said 126 pupils would start the school year - 15 less than this time last year. He said there were 10 preps.

"We are down this year compared to normal but there is a bigger intake next year," he said.

Mr Parry said there were three new families starting at the school.

Creswick North Primary School will start the year on top with four new preps compared to none last year.

Between 38 and 40 pupils will start at the school which is about two less than last year.

Principal Pat Tacey said a good class would be a full class, but was satisfied with the numbers.

Daylesford Primary School is down 26 pupils from last year with 295 pupils starting today.

Principal Peter Burke said 33 preps would start their schooling tomorrow.

"The preps are looking forward to starting," he said.

Drummond Primary School will welcome two new preps taking numbers to 12 - one more than last year.

Newlyn Primary School is down in its enrolment numbers. It will start with 24 pupils this year, eight less than last year. The school has three preps.

St Augustine's Primary School in Creswick will see 105 pupils start the year with 13 preps set to start this Friday.

Trentham and District Primary School had an intake of 70 pupils, including seven preps.

Numbers at Yandoit Primary School have dropped slightly with nine pupils starting compared to 13 last year. The school welcomes two preps.

Hepburn, Smeaton and St Michael's primary schools were unavailable for comment.
