Eamonn braves the clippers for his best mate

MATESHIP came to the fore at Daylesford Primary School last week.

Eamonn McGrath-Lester lost his locks - for the second time in two years - inspired by his best mate, Liam Murray.

When Liam's mother died from cancer in 2004, Eamonn, 10, said he had asked himself, at the time, "what can I do to help".

Showing courage beyond his years, Eamonn decided to join the World's Greatest Shave and, at the tender age of eight, had his head shaved, along with many older participants, in Ballarat.

Two years later, his entire school turned out to watch as hairdresser Sali Alexander, combed, snipped and then shaved, Eamonn's curls.

As the students applauded, stamped on the gym floor and chanted "Eamonn, Eamonn", his mother Marcia McGrath said she felt "a little sad" at her son's new look but was also clearly proud of his commitment.

Meanwhile, Liam, also 10, couldn't keep the grin off his face.

"We've been best friends since we were born," he said.

"It's good."

Although Eamonn has reached his target of $300 for the Leukaemia Foundation, sponsorship for his shave are still being accepted at the school until March 30.

Also raising money for World's Greatest Shave last Saturday were James Leonard and Kylie Donkers, both employees at Daylesford's Boomerang Ranch.

Ranch owner Theresa Cook said the couple had raised $2000 for the Leukaemia Foundation and also provided added excitement for visiting children with disabilities from Noah's Ark.

Ms Cook said Mr Leonard and Ms Donkers also volunteered with Kids under Kanvas, another organisation helping children with disabilities.
