Drummond Primary gets a green thumbs up

14 Feb, 2006 11:41 AM
DRUMMOND Primary School has begun a cycle that guarantees fresh produce and healthy eating.

A vegetable garden, including three no-dig beds, has been built after the school received a healthy schools grant last year.

Principal Dianne van Baalen said a fourth bed is being planned as well as a fence to keep out the resident hare.

"The students have been responsible for establishing the beds, with help from parents, planting, mulching, feeding, weeding and watering," she said.

Ms van Baalen said parents volunteered to water the garden in the school holidays.

"The results are fantastic, you should have seen the delight on the children's faces when they saw how much everything had grown."

Ms van Baalen said pupils visited Fernleigh Organic Farm and learnt about the importance of growing and eating organic produce.

"They have the fun job of harvesting and eating the fresh produce. They have learnt so much from the whole project," she said.

Pupils are collecting seed from the sunflowers, lettuces, chick peas and beans.

"The whole process will begin again," Ms van Baalen said.
