SEVERAL sheep had their ears torn and throats ripped in a dog attack at Creswick that has been described as cruel and savage.
The attacks at two properties in Broomfield Rd are believed to have happened overnight on March 14 and 15.
At one property three sheep were left dead and six were mauled while at the other property at least six sheep were killed and nine badly injured.
Owners of one of the properties Daryl and Lyn New said they were shocked by the number of dead and injured sheep.
Mr New was forced to shoot one of his sheep when he found it bleeding with a broken neck.
"They were just laying dead everywhere . . . it had to be more than one dog," he said.
"It was a very savage attack and was one of the worst I have seen. The worst part is they maul them and eat their legs off while they are sometimes still alive."
Mr and Mrs New are now battling to keep one sheep, Leopard, alive after it had one of its ears torn off and its leg badly bitten.
Creswick Police Sergeant Dean Towk said it was believed domesticated dogs were responsible and, if charged, owners could face up to six months in jail or a $12,000 fine.
Public help is sought to help identify the dogs responsible and their owners.
"We believe it would be most likely more than one dog," Sgt Towk said.
"They will be domesticated dogs and there will be a group of them that get together and they go out and get the pack mentality to hunt and kill.
"People might know someone has a certain dog that is always out."
Mr New said he was concerned that the next time it could be a small child attacked in the area.
"We had four attacks last year," he said.
"I can't sit up all night and watch them. Sometimes it happens during the day."
The other property owner did not want to comment.
