Developing a trend

DEVELOPERS in Hepburn Shire are going against the statewide trend of using private building surveyors and opting for Hepburn Shire Council building surveyors, a report has found.

The statewide average for building permits issued by all municipalities is 25 per cent, while Hepburn Shire is responsible for issuing on average more than 60 per cent of permits.

Council building surveyor Craig Fletcher said that despite the competition of private surveyors from across the state, the council service was highly regarded and performing well.

"So much so that we are going against the state trend," he said.

"Council staff work closely with applicants to ensure a successful building project. Ratepayers tell us they choose to use the council service for the peace of mind that comes from knowing that council is here for the long term."

Mr Fletcher said that because of a number of new initiatives and the professional service offered, most people were opting to use the municipal building surveyors for their building projects.

He said the council had the advantage of offering a locally-based, professional service.

"Council staff have many years of experience, along with local knowledge, which means they are well suited to giving practical solutions to assist building projects."

Before starting works on any site, residents are advised to contact the council to determine if a building permit is required and to enquire about the process.
