Deputy position out as Smith steps in

05 Dec, 2006 12:16 PM
DAVID Smith has been appointed mayor of the Hepburn Shire Council after a three-vote victory at a statutory meeting held on Monday night.

The Birch Ward councillor from Rocklyn has held the position twice, in 1999-2000 and 2002-2003, and has 11 years experience in local government.

"I believe in a strong focus on the council and the community working together for the betterment of the whole shire," he said.

Cr Smith won votes from Cr Janine Booth, Cr Tim Hayes and his own, while outgoing deputy mayor Cr Bill McClenaghan managed two, his own and that of outgoing mayor Cr Heather Mutimer.

Despite opposition from Cr McClenaghan and Cr Mutimer, Cr Booth, Cr Hayes and Cr Smith voted successfully to dump the position of deputy mayor.

Cr Mutimer said the position of deputy mayor was valuable and gave the opportunity for training.

Cr McClenaghan said he was very shocked and disappointed that the position of deputy mayor had been abolished.

In supporting the motion, Cr Hayes said the position of deputy mayor could create a "two man show".

"I believe all councillors should participate...there is no need for passengers...I think we all need to be in the drivers seat," he said.

All four councillors will now provide back-up for Cr Smith.
