Daylesford tourism plan takes holistic approach

31 Mar, 2009 10:56 AM
THE formation of a Destination Daylesford Tourism Board is a step closer.

The board will incorporate the roles of the Hepburn Regional Tourism Association and the former Hepburn Shire Tourism Advisory Committee with "a strong presence and partnership with Hepburn Shire Council".

HRTA president Carol Hulst, who is also the board's interim working party chairwoman, said the shire had been an integral part of the planning and works since the inception of Destination Daylesford.

"Resignations directly impacting the shire's Tourism and Economic Development structure have created an opportunity for the chief executive officer (Kaylene Conrick) to review the existing shire structure and propose a new structure, which has been recently announced," Ms Hulst said.

Ms Hulst said a key strength of the new structure was the contribution by and partnership with Tourism Victoria.

"Specifically Tourism Victoria has launched a Regional Tourism Action Plan that addresses challenges regional tourism face in a rapidly changing environment.

"Such challenges involve lack of resources, including an unsustainable reliance on volunteers and inadequate strategic direction to strengthen tourism and ensure growth."

Ms Hulst said Tourism Victoria's regional tourism tended to focus on marketing but the new action plan proposed "a more holistic approach" that included industry and product development, regional marketing, skills training, mentoring, networking, identifying investment priorities and managing sustainability.

"A regional tourism board with responsibility for all these aspects of tourism across the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region will be formed later in the year," she said.
