Daylesford Secondary College Official opening heralds a '21st-century approach'

DAYLESFORD Secondary College students are reaping the benefits of a $6.4 million state-of-the-art facility.

"It's pretty cool," year seven student Daniel Lendrec said on Friday, November 20, during the official opening of the new buildings.

The facilities include a gymnasium, which is shared with the community, a year-nine learning centre, information technology and student facilities, and an administration area.

Education minster Bronwyn Pike attended the ceremony, describing the new facilities as a 21st-century approach to schooling.

"It's just fantastic what they've done at Daylesford Secondary College," she said.

"These new facilities at Daylesford Secondary College are just one example of what is happening in education right across Victoria."

Acting principal Anthony Avotins said the new facilities made up stage one of DSC's building and modernisation program.

One of the school's old buildings was demolished to make way for the facilities and in coming years most of the other older buildings at the school will also be demolished and replaced.

Year 10 student Matilda Woodroofe said the new classrooms were more comfortable, making learning easier.

Fellow student Aiden Carter described them as "more modern".

"It's a lot different. There is a big open area where you can all come together and interact with each other," he said.

The State Government funded the modernisation project, the shared use ARC gymnasium and the year-nine learning centre to the value of $4.4 million, while the Federal Government provided $1.1 million.

Member for Ballarat East Geoff Howard said the ARC was a great example of government and community partnerships benefiting Victorian schools.

"The new state-of-the-art facilities for DSC highlight how communities can work together to build quality facilities for their schools and for the community to use," Mr Howard said.

Hepburn Shire, the ARC, DSC and the community also contributed funds.
