THE RAINS are well and truly here, causing waterways in the region to reach overload.
Heavy rain has caused St Georges Lake, Hepburn Springs' blowhole and Sailors Falls to overflow.
Parks Victoria regional marketing and communications officer Jo Curkpatrick said the reserves hadn't flowed this rapidly for at least five years - which was good news for the natural surroundings in the area.
"Once the water overflows, the trees just respond really well and you start to get good growth," Ms Curkpatrick said.
"The animals and birds love it and it just revives everything and freshens it up."
Ms Curkpatrick said the surrounding catchment areas had also contributed to the rise in water levels.
"There's a big area of forest and parkland so the water gradually flows through," she said.
"It's a healthy, refreshing, rejuvenation of the landscape."
Parks Victoria ranger Paul Fernando said areas could flood if the heavy rainfall continued.
He said it had taken about a week for St Georges Lake to rise by a couple of metres.
"It's good because it clears everything out and gives it a good finish," he said.
"It's been years since the water has flown in and out."
Mr Fernando said the benefits of overflowing waterways stretched beyond environmental, providing further recreational opportunities to the community.
"You'll get more tourists back, swimmers and people picnicking," he said.
