Daylesford College gets second place in Young Gourmet Competition

22 Nov, 2005 10:27 AM
DAYLESFORD Secondary College competed against schools from around the nation to place second in the Young Gourmet competition.

Winners were announced at an award ceremony in South Australia last week.

The Bullboar project took nine months to complete and involved local research, animal husbandry, product testing, packaging design and commercial manufacture.

Staff and students travelled to Adelaide to accept the award and over $2000 worth of prizes for the school's kitchen.

Project coordinator Gary Thomas was impressed with the students' effort.

"I am really pleased with this result," he said.

"Our students had to get over a number of hurdles not presented to any of the other competing schools and consider ethical issues many grown adults have never faced. They honoured our region's ancestors and engaged strongly

with the present community. I am impressed by their emotional maturity, drive and commitment."

Professional food industry experts assessed each product against nine specialised criteria before placing Daylesford second to Trinity College in Gawler.

Project leader and Daylesford Secondary College accountancy teacher John Peart said the school did well for its size.

"Trinity College is a brand new private school, 10 times bigger than Daylesford, well-resourced and with a staff of 200," he said.

"We have punched well above our weight."

Judges were impressed with the Daylesford team's enterprise.

"This was a very professional and thorough effort throughout all criteria from produce to finance. This school did not leave anything under-researched or to chance," they said.

The Farm to Table challenge was a project of the Children's Food Education Foundation.

SBS television was in Daylesford during August filming aspects of the project for its show aifFoodlovers Guide to Australiaaif, which will go to air at 7:30pm on Wednesday, November 30.
