A HISTORIC bridge that was dismantled nearly two years ago is causing angst within the community who are waiting for it to be repaired.
Local fire brigades want Niggls Bridge over Creswick Creek in Jackass Gully Rd, Creswick, repaired to improve accessibility in the event of a fire.
The access road connects to a network of roads within the School of Forestry Demonstration Forest, is the only access road to Eaton's Dam and is a well-used access road to the WthG. Spence homesite.
Creswick fire brigade captain Mark Spenceley said all firefighters were made aware of the condition of the road.
"It restricts access coming from Melbourne Rd," he said.
"If we are in there, it could slow our way out."
Mr Spenceley said fire units could cross the creek, but would have to do so very slowly.
Newlyn-Dean fire brigade secretary/treasurer and deputy group officer Darryl Williams said he wanted the bridge repaired as soon as possible.
"From a CFA point of view it's not too bad because it has been filled in," he said.
"But if the weather turns (bad) we won't have access."
Niggls Bridge was the subject of heated discussion at a Hepburn Shire Council meeting in January last year.
It remains unknown who removed the timber planks from the bridge. Creswick Police investigated the incident, but found no clues.
Independent member Dianne Hadden demanded authorities repair the bridge which is on a shire road.
She said concrete box culverts, which she believed would be used to make a new bridge, had been sitting on the side of the road since April last year.
"The concrete pipes have been sitting there damaging the native bush. The natural flow of the creek has been destroyed," she said.
"It's not being fixed."
Ms Hadden said at the time the bridge was destroyed, the Department of Sustainability and Environment blamed council while council blamed the DSE.
A DSE spokesperson said the group was funding a new crossing and works were planned for this summer.
A council spokesperson said council had no involvement with Niggls Bridge in any way.
