Creswick trains return

27 Jul, 2010 12:42 PM
ON A historic day, Creswick residents gathered on Saturday for the departure of the first rail service to run on the Maryborough to Melbourne line since the closure of the Mildura line in the 1990s.

Ballarat MLA Geoff Howard, who was among the passengers to board the first service from Maryborough's iconic railway station, said it was an historic day for the people of Creswick and he was glad to be a part of it.

"This service will provide an important daily connection between Maryborough, Creswick and Ballarat, and on to Melbourne," Mr Howard said.

"The rail service will give people in the region more transport options and provide better access to employment and education opportunities as well as health, retail and leisure services in Ballarat and Melbourne."

The Member for Ripon, Joe Helper said it was a great day in Maryborough's proud history.

`We have all been looking forward so much to the return of our trains and the fact that people can now use and benefit from this service is fantastic," Mr Helper said.

"`The return of our trains means more economic activity, more jobs and more opportunities to share quality time with friends and family.

"That's what this service means to our community."

Mr Helper said people should note that some works were still taking place including signalling, level crossing and canopy works at Maryborough Station.

"In particular, we would urge motorists to drive safely and heed all signage and signalling at level crossings," he said.

It was a wonderful day with hundreds of people on the platform along with the premier. Three hearty cheers went up to greet the train. What on earth made the Advocate place it on page three of the paper, giving the cover over to large font headlines about 'weeds in a roundabout'? The accompanying photograph looked like the staff photgrapher couldnt be bothered to wait for either the premier or train to arrive. I think the Advocate is too Daylesford-centric. Last year it failed to report a major recycled art exhibiton in Creswick. If the train was bought back to Daylesford it would no doubt have been on the put on the cover. The Advocates presentation of this historic event was most dissapointing.
