A GROUP of Creswick residents have reacted with vehement opposition to a self-service car wash planned for their street, which comprises predominantly heritage-listed homes.
An application was made to Hepburn Shire Council in August for a permit to establish the facility in Cambridge St, one block back from the town's main thoroughfare, Albert St.
Resident Megan Ali said the fight was on when council delivered the application notices to the ntsaareasntearea's mail boxes, saying many people lodged their objections immediately.
"Why would you want a car wash away from the main thoroughfare?" she asked.
"This street is really quiet and this would just bring a lot of extra traffic in.
"There's young children living here."
Ms Ali said of chief concern for residents was the 24-hour, unmanned aspect of the facility, which residents believed would compromise safety.
"It just doesn't seem appropriate, it's not essential and it's in a ridiculous spot," she said.
"I originally moved from Melbourne.
"You don't buy a property like this to sit on your verandah and watch people washing their cars."
Meanwhile, Mayor Bill McClenaghan said council could not make any preliminary comments about any planning application.
"That would mean that we or individual councillors have pre-judged the issue and/or have a bias," he said.
"We, in our capacity as the Delegates Planning Committee, will consider the application when and if referred to us with a planning report and recommendation. "We will decide then.
"Of course if the proposal meets all planning and zoning criteria and there are no objections, a permit may be issued under officer delegation and not come to the DPC."
CEO Kaylene Conrick said the application was due to be considered by council in December.
