Creswick nursing home rape charge heard

18 May, 2010 12:11 PM
A MAN faced court last week accused of raping a resident at a state-run nursing home in Creswick.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court charged with rape and indecent assault.

The charges relate to a series of offences alleged to have been committed between September and October last year.

The man was bailed to face the Ballarat Magistrates Court on July 1 for a committal mention.

The Creswick District Nursing Home, in Napier St, has 30 beds and is run by Hepburn Health Service.

A spokesman from the Department of Human Services said "as the matter is before the court it would be inappropriate to comment".

"However, we can confirm the staff member was stood down as soon as the health service became aware of the allegations," he said.

Last year a government report revealed abuse allegations in Victorian nursing homes was increasing.

The Department of Health and Ageing was notified of 1411 alleged assaults in nursing homes in 2008-09, according to a report tabled in parliament.

Of those, 1121 involved alleged unreasonable force, 272 involved alleged unlawful sexual contact and 18 involved both.

In 2008, a Mt Martha man was jailed for six-months after bashing and raping an 85-year-old woman with dementia.
