Creswick and Clunes sports clubs to benefit from funding

24 Jan, 2012 12:05 PM
CRESWICK and Clunes Football and Netball Clubs have each received $10,000 grants from the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation.

The foundation dispersed the funds on behalf of the Victorian Flood Appeal to the beleaguered sports clubs, helping to get them back on track for the next playing season in the Central Highlands Football League.

Creswick and District Community Bank branch manager Les Vercoe made the presentation to the club presidents on Monday.

"This wouldn’t have happened if we (Bendigo Bank branch) weren’t here,” Mr Vercoe said.

He said the funds were only distributed to not-for-profit organisations and the football clubs applied for funding under the auspices of organisations such as the Lions Club.

"We’ve already given $4700 to the Kingston Agricultural Society and $4500 to the Clunes Pre-School,” he said.

"We’ve also given away almost $100,000 from the Creswick and Clunes District Flood Appeal.

"I think all the flood funding is gone now.”

President of the Clunes Football and Netball Club, Doug Garth, said the grant would be spent on refurbishing the club change rooms, which were badly damaged in the floods.

"We’ll use it to plaster, paint and tile the rooms,” he said.

He said even though Clunes had no home games last season, the community had rallied behind the club and it now had close to 300 non-playing members, plus about 150 players in both the football and netball teams.

"We’re meeting this week to look at fundraising for a window viewing area from the clubrooms,” he said.

President of the Creswick Football and Netball Club, Peter Considine, said his club would use the money to replace furniture that was lost in the floods.

He said the club was moving its facilities to the Doug Lindsay Recreation Reserve this coming season, and the new furniture would be used by all of the reserve clubs, not just the footballers and netballers.

He said Creswick now had about 100 non-playing members and 200 players.

"We’re building a club, not a team,” he said.

"It’s about having people involved from around the town.”
