Council defers access motion

22 Aug, 2006 09:54 AM
HEPBURN Shire Council deferred a motion to improve access along commercial footpaths at its monthly meeting held last week at the Leonards Hill Hall.

Mayor Heather Mutimer said the item was deferred to allow the Hepburn Community Access Group to be consulted.

"A clear path of access along our footpaths is an important issue and one which the Hepburn Community Access Group has been discussing," she said.

"We should seek their input prior to amending the policy. There also needs to be good dialogue with the traders to assist them in understanding the importance and benefits of such a policy."

Council director of infrastructure and development Rod Conway said it was recommended there was a two-metre continuous accessible path from the shop fronts.

He said the matter was subject of a requirement to fulfil council's obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Council compliance staff will visit businesses to explain why council is amending the policy and alternative options for displaying goods and placement of tables and chairs.

The change is expected to be effective from October 1.
