THE Hepburn Springs community is a step closer in retaining one of Victoria's historic 50-metre pools.
State Minister for Planning Rob Hulls visited Hepburn Springs Pool last month to talk with the community about plans for its restoration.
Four members of the Hepburn Springs community, Ballarat East MLA Geoff Howard and Hepburn Shire mayor Heather Mutimer and Holcombe ward councillor Bill McClenaghan joined Mr Hulls to discuss concerns about the
availability of insurance indemnity for the pool.
They discussed details about the historic significance of the pool and works undertaken by the community to maintain and develop this much loved community asset.
"The community, Hepburn Shire and I have been working to have this insurance issue addressed for nearly two years now and I believe that it is time to ask the minister to step in to have it resolved," Mr Howard said.
"Unless adequate coverage can be provided, the whole future of the pool is in limbo. This also means that no maintenance can be done within the pool precinct."
Mr Hulls said that by seeing the pool first-hand and talking with community members, he was able to appreciate how special it was.
"This is a very attractive spot," he said.
"I understand why locals would be so passionate about it."
Mr Hulls said he would not make any commitments at this time, but he would certainly be working to ensure that a satisfactory solution could be found which could see the historic pool retained for the community to enjoy.
Hepburn Springs resident Peter O'Mara said he hoped the pool's future would be determined before this year's budget.
"The pool is a huge community asset," Mr O'Mara said.
"It represents something other than a body of water."
