HEPBURN Shire Council has joined the fight to save five payphones from being removed.
Telstra has earmarked two phones in Daylesford, at Camp and Hospital streets, and one phone in each of Clunes, Hepburn and Kingston.
Mayor Bill McClenaghan said the proposed removal had concerned residents and the council.
Cr McClenaghan said the council had spoken to Telstra Countrywide, which had indicated that the low usage of the payphones did not warrant continuing the service.
"We understand that it is common for these phones to be out of order so it is hard to argue that there is a decline in patronage if people have been unable to use the phones," he said.
"Telstra has informed us that the process for removing pay phones begins with consultation with the council.
"We have certainly advised that we are concerned with the removal of any of the shire's payphones."
Cr McClenaghan said one of the Daylesford payphones was outside the hospital and nursing home and the Kingston payphone was the only one in the township.
Stickers have been placed on the phones earmarked for removal asking people to contact Telstra to register their concerns.
"We are encouraging people with concerns to make the most of this consultation process and contact Telstra as it will be too late once the phones are taken away," Cr McClenaghan said.
"Telstra has also committed to fixing all defective payphones in the shire for the consultation period."
Cr McClenaghan said in letters to the council that Telstra said payphone services were constantly being reviewed to ensure infrastructure met the community needs.
However some payphone services were suffering from a decline in patronage due to shifting population and the use of different technology including mobiles and the internet.
The Advocate has received a number of letters regarding the possible removal of payphones along with concerns many are not in working order.
