Clunes 'puma' on the prowl

20 Jul, 2010 01:03 PM
A BIG cat resembling a puma was claimed to have been spotted off Fairview Rd in Clunes last week.

Resident Wayne Glennie said his partner had gone for her morning walk when she saw a large cat in the bushes around 9am on Wednesday.

"It had a a distinct tail of a Cougar or Puma-type cat, it was a sandy colour with the tail quite recogniseable," Mr Glennie said.

"After she had a good look at it, it made itself very scarce and sneaked off into the bush."

A fortnight ago, Mr Glennie said he saw large footprints in the same area but initially thought they belonged to a hunting dog.

"Now we seem to be putting the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle," he said.

Council said they had no history of similar reports in the region.

"It's not an everyday occurrence but evidence suggests that they are out there for sure," Mr Glennie said.

Sorry, but that's a dog print.

Yes that is definitely a dog track, cats do not show their claws and their pads a rounded. To see a good example of the tracks of big cats visit Werribee Zoo, they were good enough to walk their big cats over wet cement and leave tracks for all to see.

In the early 1990s there were reports of pumas in the pine plantations at Creswick, and some physical evidence was found. This included tracks and scratch marks on tree about 4 feet above the ground; I still have photos of some of these.

Main thing notriceable about these cats is the length of the legs, and the footprints , especially the back, resemble dog prints more than cat.

Actually they resemble cheetahs more so than puma.

An animal moved into the caves on Mt Beckworth around 1944, it stunk and all the foxes vamoosed.

Although we have always had the bigcat, this time was a couple of years after pumas were released in the Grampians.

When I was a kid on Stoney Creek, must have been around 1937, I heard an animal screaming in the Yard. I took it to be a bitch fox, and through the years it puzzled me. This screamed continuously while a fox will give a couple of calls then move. I now know that it was a bigcat.

An old Aunt told me that when they were clearing bushland at Lara circa late 1800, there were panthers and tasmanlan devils there.
