Christmas lights hit by vandals

18 Dec, 2007 10:29 AM
LIKE every other year Hepburn Springs residents Ken and Merle Rea had a spectacular 2007 Christmas lights display.

But that all changed early last Wednesday morning when thieves stole the display's best parts.

Another spectacle in Hepburn Springs, at Fourteenth St, was attacked on the same night. Police are investigating both incidents.

Mrs Rea said three candy canes, reindeer, and a snowman were included in the list of decorations stolen from her Golf Links Rd house.

"It looked beautiful, people kept stopping me and telling me how good they looked.

"Fixing them is a hard job because they're missing and it's left a hole in the display," Mrs Rea said.

She started the display 15 years ago and has added extra features each December since.

"I just love doing it. It gives me an extra interest in Christmas and the kids just love it. We get heaps of cars coming past, with exciting kids in them, close to Christmas," Mrs Rea said.

Mrs Rea said she was considering giving up her annual Christmas lights tradition following the attack.

"If they are going to come and do again next year there's no point.

"They just leave destruction," she said.

Daylesford Police Senior Constable Craig Hocking said the decorations were stolen between 11:15pm Tuesday and 8.15am Wednesday.

"It's quite disappointing. They're quite extensive displays and it's a shame someone would do this," Sen Const Hocking said.

Police are keen to speak to any witnesses.

"It's quite possible the lights and decorations were dumped over someone's fence, so we'd be keen to hear from anyone with information," Sen Const Craig Hocking said.

Another Hepburn Springs house was attacked the same night.

Twelfth St resident Kim Cook woke to hear coloured garden solar lights being stolen.

Ms Cook, who hosted a Christmas party for workmates that night, said the theft had dampened her Christmas. The lights are valued at $115.
