CFA advises no 'last resort' for Blackwood and Hepburn

15 Dec, 2009 10:53 AM
RESIDENTS of Hepburn Springs and Blackwood have been urged to flee early in the event of a fire emergency as they are still without a "last resort".

They were not included in a list of Neighbourhood Safer Place's or places of last resort, released by the Country Fire Authority on December 8.

NSPs are being set up as areas that would provide some sanctuary from the life-threatening effects of a bushfire, such as direct flame contact or radiant heat.

As a last resort, residents could go there in a fire emergency.

The CFA has identified 104 NSPs after assessing 211 potential sites against its guidelines.

Creswick's NSPs are Creswick Visitor Information Centre on Ballarat Rd and Lindsay Park on Luttet St.

In Daylesford, NSPs have been designated as Daylesford Town Hall in Vincent St and Daylesford Secondary College in Smith St.

Trentham's NSP is the CBD in High St (between Market and Quarry streets).

Country Fire Authority Midlands Wimmera general manager Don Kelly said that for places without an NSP it was important that people make an early decision to leave.

"(For people) in Blackwood and Hepburn Springs, if the fire plan is to leave, don't wait to the last minute - leave early," Mr Kelly said.

He said the CFA had worked hard to find safer places in Hepburn Springs and Blackwood, and looked at a number of sites, but all were considered unsuitable.

Neighbourhood Safer Places are listed on the CFA website at www.cfa.vic.gov.au

Tourists will always stay away from our area in droves in the hot summertime - why not make huge very wide fire breaks (completely without trees) so that we can really control bushfires which burn from the volatile oils in all our trees? Trees are lovely to look at but immensely dangerous during bushfires. Pine trees actually explode from the volatile oils. All tourists know this.

We live in a town in a forest. We choose this knowing the risk. Even a 300m firebreak would be useless in Feb 7 conditions with spotting kilometres in advance. Look at Bellinzona. It burnt in November and took a neighbouring dwelling with it. There was a clear zone between and many tankers on site. Fuel reduction, careful design and siting of new buildings and an understanding of the need to leave early for 99% of the housing stock is reality.
