Caelli's ANZAC spirit to shine on study tour

27 Feb, 2007 09:47 AM
CRESWICK'S Caelli Greenbank will join a study tour of Gallipoli and other significant war sites on the Western Front as part of the third annual Victorian Spirit of ANZAC Prize.

Caelli, a Year 11 student at Mt Clear College, will join nine other students from across Victoria on the study tour in April.

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks presented the 2007 Spirit of ANZAC Prize to the students at a reception in Melbourne on February 16.

He said the prize encouraged young Victorians to remember and honour Australia's war veterans.

Member for Ballarat East Geoff Howard congratulated Caelli on her successful application.

"I'm sure she will remember the experience for the rest of her life and I look forward to hearing about her experiences after her return," he said.

"The study tour will give Caelli and the other students the chance to stand on the beaches and the cliffs where those young men, many of them not much older then them, forged the ANZAC spirit in 1915."

Caelli, 14, will become the only family member to visit her great great uncle's memorial at Lone Pine.

She said she had always been interested in the spirit of the ANZACs and marched in the last six Creswick parades.

The study tour, between April 13 and 28, includes significant war site visits in Turkey, France, Belgium and the United Kingdom.

The students will start their study tour by spending two days in Gallipoli before visiting the site of the ancient city of Troy.

Caelli was among 242 students who entered the competition.

The 10 prize winners were chosen from a shortlist of 27 state finalists by a panel led by past president of the Victorian Olympic Council Major General Jim Barry.
